If there’s one thing us Canadian fit girls should be proud of on Canada’s 150th Birthday, it’s maple syrup. It’s our nation’s candy and we love it. As a matter of fact, it’s good for you, too.

Okay, okay, it’s still sugar. Maybe (just maybe) we shouldn’t do like Buddy The Elf does and drink it with a straw. However, compared to other natural sweeteners, maple syrup is king. There are studies that show maple syrup aiding weight loss. Who know’s if it’s true. I mean, Beyonce essentially drank maple syrup for two weeks straight during the master cleanse and I think we can all agree that she looks great.

Whether or not the sweet stuff helps you to lose weight, it has a lot of other amazing, and legitimate, properties that are good for any diet. Here’s a list of benefits:

  • Contains antioxidants, manganese, calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium.
  • Has a lower glycemic index than cane sugar, plus more nutrients.
  • Unrefined.
  • Fights inflammatory disease.
  • Helps protect skin health.
  • Aids Digestion.

And remember, buy local, Canadian syrup or else it doesn’t count!
